This release changed the source of truth to the item instance itself. Two swords of the same type can now have their own history, wear, stats, and state without depending on shortcuts tied to a slot or ItemId. That also meant revisiting how items move through inventory, belts, chests, and equipment so the identity of a specific piece never gets lost. On top of that foundation, tier stopped being only a label and became an envelope of possibilities. The forge got editable data for controlling quality and affix space, preparing the game for equipment that can actually feel different instead of a straight ladder of “iron, then steel, then the next bigger number.” It is a very structural change with a simple goal: when a good item drops, I want that exact item to matter.
Every item became truly unique
The game already had quality, affixes, and durability, but some of that information still lived closer to the item type than to the exact copy the player was holding.
